The purpose of this ring is to engage the students in 3D printing while learning about the processes that make it possible to obtain clean water. It takes 1 hour and 45min on a Ultimaker 2 at the preset “fast” speed on Cura 15.04.4.
How it works:
The unclean water is deposited in the bottom of the 2L bottle in a black container and the ring is secured to the top of the bottle with the groove facing upward (inside the bottle). This is all internally located in relation to the bottle. The apparatus should then be placed in direct sunlight and as it heats up the water will start to evaporate from the bottom. As the vapor rises it will encounter the cooler top of the bottle and will condense into droplets. These droplets will then fall into the solar ring which is printed with white plastic so that it will not heat up as easily. This now “clean” drinking water is now residing in the solar ring.
Materials:
- 1 2-liter soda bottle
- 1 3D printer solar ring
- 1 black cup or bowl that c
